Europe’s largest network for sustainable construction certifies buildings and neighborhoods based on a holistic approach to sustainability that evaluates ecological, economic, sociocultural, technical, and process factors, as well as site quality.
Ecological Quality
Resource use, greenhouse gas emissions, life cycle assessment, and biodiversity.
Economic Quality
Life-cycle costs, cost-effectiveness, and value retention.
Sociocultural & Functional Quality
Health, thermal and acoustic comfort, accessibility, and design.
Technical Quality
Fire safety, sound insulation, ease of dismantling, and choice of materials.
Process Quality
Quality of planning, construction site operations, and communication with users.
Location Quality
Transportation access, infrastructure, and neighborhood integration.
For new construction, the key assessment areas are weighted equally in the overall evaluation.
For existing buildings currently in use, greater emphasis is placed on ecological, economic, and sociocultural quality. As a result, the system enables a nuanced and usage-based assessment of sustainability performance.
